Web pages are no longer static documents: client-side rendering, infinite scrolling, personalized feeds, and A/B testing make exact URLs insufficient for reliably pointing at particular pieces of content. nthlink proposes a pragmatic, developer-friendly technique for creating durable links to elements in changing documents by combining ordinal locality (“nth”) with subtle content fingerprints (“link”). At its core, an nthlink identifies an element on a page by two pieces of information: the element’s ordinal position within a meaningful scope (for example, “the 5th article in the feed”) and a short fingerprint derived from the element’s visible content (for example, the first few words or a hash of its headline). When a user follows an nthlink, the client or server attempts to resolve the target by locating the n-th element that matches the fingerprint or by finding the closest match when the exact ordinal no longer applies. Why this hybrid approach? Pure ordinal references (like “the 3rd item”) are simple but brittle: insertions or deletions earlier in a list shift indices and break the link. Pure content-based matching (like searching for a headline) can fail when content is lightly edited or when multiple items share similar text. Combining both increases the chance of successful resolution: the ordinal narrows the search space and the fingerprint confirms identity. Use cases for nthlink are plentiful. Editors and journalists linking to items in live feeds can keep pointers intact across frequent updates. E-learning platforms can maintain references to steps inside interactive lessons even as lessons change order. Automated web testing can use nthlinks for more stable selectors in end-to-end tests. Social sharing of specific posts within infinite-scrolling timelines becomes more reliable when links encode both position and content. Implementing nthlink is straightforward. On creation, capture the element’s index within an agreed container, and compute a small fingerprint—say, the first 20 characters of visible text or a short base64 hash of normalized text. Encode these as query parameters or path fragments (e.g., /feed#nth=5&fp=Wx4aT). On resolution, parse the parameters and search the live page: first try index-based lookup with fingerprint verification; if that fails, fall back to a nearest-match algorithm that scans nearby items for a matching fingerprint or a fuzzy text match. There are trade-offs. Choice of scope (what “nth” counts) must be well-defined; privacy and security concerns arise if fingerprints reveal sensitive content; and fuzzy matching adds complexity. Performance can be an issue on very large pages if naive scanning is used. Despite these caveats, nthlink offers a pragmatic balance between simplicity and resilience. In a web ecosystem dominated by dynamic layouts and personalized content, nthlink provides a practical tool for developers and content creators who need links to last.
